Most modern electric gadgets consume electricity even when turned off. The energy used to keep display clocks lit and memory chips working accounts for 5 percent of total domestic energy consumption.
What you can do

- Home Entertainment Systems: Use a power strip to switch off your TV, stereo and DVD player (you can cut off all three devices at once).
- Phone Chargers: Wall chargers for small electronics suck energy when left plugged into the wall. Once you are done, stow them away.
- Personal Computers: Keep your computer and its monitor in sleep mode rather than leaving them on around the clock.
